Beatty, Nevada : Information & Photographs
Beatty is a small town of 1600 people located 115 miles north of Las Vegas and 94 miles south of Tonopah on US Highway 95. As Beatty is the only town around on the often-busy US Highway 95, Beatty has numerous tourist services available that are open twenty-four hours a day.
Also known as the “Gateway to Death Valley,” Beatty sits just thirteen miles from the entrance to Death Valley National Park. Although Death Valley is definitely not the place to visit during the summer (unless you really enjoy scorching hot temperatures), during the October – April period, Death Valley National Park is quite scenic and a unique place to visit.
Beatty has an elevation of 3300 feet. The climate, while not quite as warm as Las Vegas (which has a lower elevation), is still quite warm during the summer, with normal summer highs in the 90’s and low 100’s. Temperatures during the winter are mild, although the nights can be chilly.
Anyone passing through Beatty should consider stopping at the Death Valley Nut & Candy Company. This store, which also sells gasoline, calls itself the “World’s Prettiest Gas Station.” While I can’t vouch for the accuracy of their claim as I haven’t visited every gas station in the world, there’s no doubt that the gas station is very nice and unique. The architecture of the building is far from the normal “convenience store” construction. Fountains gurgle outside of the building, too. Inside the store, travelers will find an extensive selection of nuts and candy, along with ice cream and the more normal typical convenience store foods. In short, it’s worth stopping here.
