Hawthorne, Nevada : Information & Photographs
Located in west-central Nevada on US Highway 95, Hawthorne is home to the massive Hawthorne Army Depot, which is a US Army ammunition storage site. This complex spans over 147,000 acres and has more than 2400 ammunition bunkers.
Due to the Army Depot and the fact the US Highway 95 passes right through town, Hawthorne can be a busy place at times. Visitors to town will have plenty of choices in terms of where to stay, where to eat and where to fetch supplies. Although Hawthorne is a small town, with a population of just 3100 people, due to the traffic and Army Depot the town has services for far more people.
Hawthorne has a nice location for outdoor interests. The scenic Walker Lake lies just to the north of town. Access to Walker Lake is excellent, as US Highway 95 follows the lakes western shoreline. The scenic and isolated Wassuk Range looms just to the west of town. The unique Mono Lake lies about thirty miles to the south of town, while the eastern entrance to Yosemite is just about an hour away. Additionally, the Walker River Scenic Drive begins about twenty miles to the west of town, too.
Hawthorne also has a museum that anyone who is interested in the military and military ordnance will enjoy. The museum, called the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum, is located in the downtown area. This museum, which was free of charge the last time I stopped there, has displays of numerous different types of military ordnance, along with other military related displays.

Where to Stay in Hawthorne
There are several small hotels in Hawthorne. But to the best of my knowledge, none of them are available for online booking. Additionally, Hawthorne has quite a few developed and un-developed camping areas outside of town - including a developed site on the western side of Walker Lake. |
