Side Canyon off the Monitor Valley Scenic Drive
If a traveler on the Monitor Valley Scenic Drive feels adventurous, there is no shortage of side-roads that cut-off the main road and head toward the foothills and mountains. A word of warning, though. These side-roads, while they seem "fine" in the Monitor Valley, often have a nasty tendency to deteroriate quickly once you reach the foothills and mountains. The big ruts are visible in this photo, and they only get worse further up the road. Thus, the moral of the story is - travel on these side-roads carefully and don't do anything stupid that would lead to getting stuck. Remember, cell phones won't work here!
